Stranger 08: Theremin

It is that thing I have always wanted.
This is my reason for today’s comic being late, short, and a sketch: I got a theremin last week and all my free time has been devoted to mastering its deceptive simplicity. It is one of the coolest things ever, but it demands patience. I’m better than terrible, but not good.

I do plan to do a couple songs with it, but I don’t know how long it’ll be until I get that far. I am doing one very short piece right now, which I’ll post when it’s done in a week or two. After that, who knows what I’ll end up doing. I’d like to eventually do original material, but it’s more impressive to be able to play songs people know. As it stands, I spend a large amount of time playing along to other songs that I have. It’s a lot of fun, but it makes me wonder if I should be practicing it more by itself. One nice thing about playing is that there are so few thereminists in the world that no one can come along and tell you you’re doing it wrong. (Well, unless you rest your pitch hand on top of the casing to make the notes more precise. That’s cheating.) Suffice it to say that I’m just going to mess around for now, and if I manage to create recognizable melodies, I’m happy.

What’s in the comic has happened to me three times since last week. It’s not unexpected. It just goes to show how esoteric my hobbies can be. If you still don’t know what I’m talking about, plug “Theremin” into wikipedia. I’m too lazy to do the linking right now.
