T-shirts are now available at the Not A Blog™ Cafe Press store. I’ll be putting up a few more select quotes over the next few days. If there’s one you’d like to see but I don’t have, let me know. Being a graphic designer, I’m more comfortable with the type treatments than illustration, although the “In Teh Beginning” shirt has a little sketch of a cat looking at a star. I’ll be expanding out into other things, eventually, but for now it’s Lolcat Bible focused.
And now what everyone’s been asking about: here’s a plain, easy-to-read text transcript of the lolcat in the picture—including an extra few verses at the end of Chapter 2.
1In teh beginning, Invisible Man make univerz. 2Invisible Earth was invisible. 3Invisible Man say, “I can has light.” Gotz light. 4Light iz good, iz not dark. 5Invisible Man can has day and nite. It be furst.

19Invisible Man made kittehs n birdz. He take aminulz to man so man can name dem. What man call aminulz, that wuz name. 20Man name cowz n birdz n kitteh, but he not have helpur. 21Invisible Man make man tired. “In Teh Beginning” shirt Iz ROX!!
OK you’ve sold one, I have not bought it just yet, because I want to order it with one that has the picture on the back. This won’t be a direct print so it might be expensive. I would dig…
FRONT:
1In teh beginning, Invisible Man make univerz. 2Invisible Earth was invisible. 3Invisible Man say, “I can has light.” Gotz light. 4Light iz good, iz not dark
BACK:
8Invisible Man can has Garden o Eden. Man goes in Garden. 9Invisible Man made treez that look purty n taste yummy. Garden can has in middle, good tree n bad tree.
15Invisible Man put man in Garden o Eden to wurk ther. 16Invisible Man say, “u can eats from any tree—17but not good-bad tree ‘cuz u will has death.”
18Invisible Man say, “Iz not good for man to be ‘lone. I make helpur.”
25Man and woman wur both nekkid, but has no shame.
If they charge by the letter, this could be way too much, but I really dig the designs. I just like the whole package, as it will go well with my new “In Teh Beginning” shirt.
-thx

Heh, thanks. I aim to please.
The design is limited to a 10×10 area. I’m not familiar enough with the process to know exactly how small I can make the type and still have it print legibly. I’ve got a couple coming, so when I see them, I’ll have a better idea of how much I can squeeze on there. I’m just not sure yet.
“I want to order it with one that has the picture on the back.”
How do you mean? Do you mean like with the quote on the back, or with the cat looking at the star on the back with the quote on the front?
Unfortunately, the dark shirts are in “beta”–they don’t offer an option to print on the back. That’s why the URL and everything’s on the front. Not my ideal solution, but I’ve got no other options.
“Vegitashun” is also now available as a regular shirt. (I don’t know why the shirt colors are broken up like that.) Anyway, It’s not hard at all to add an existing design to a different product, so just let me know what you want!

The best thing about the origin of this species is the way it looks like the real bible at first. That image anywhere would be great. Someone is already knocking them off on cafe press. The print is really small though. And they miss spelled “teh”.
The image should be on the back, because I don’t mind people reading it, but I don’t like standing quietly.
I’m going to do the buy 2 get one free deal at cafepress if I can. I can’t find notablogtm in the search though.
If this is not easy I’ll order one that has the quote in the prev comment. Though the image is truely the best.
-thx

I bought one of your shirts, if you had it for 19 instead of 16 I would have got that because the other shirts I got were 19 and it was free, but I’m sure they give you money and don’t say tough, yours was the free one in the order.
I have an idea… apparently woot.com launched shirt.woot.com a few days ago, coincidentally the same day I found your scripture on the blog there. The next day they launched there new website.
If you go to “what is shirt.woot.com?”
You’ll read this…
Who’s designing these t-shirts?
We’re constantly recruiting experienced, talented designers who don’t mind ruining their good name by being associated with us.
[I thought Ted won’t mind…]
Each day’s shirt description includes a little bit about that day’s artist, including links to their other work. If you like their stuff, you can check out what else they’re up to. Otherwise, some of our shirts will be designed by our in-house staff. Also, each Friday, we’ll sell the winning t-shirt from our weekly design Derby (more about that below).
Can I design a t-shirt for Shirt.Woot?
If you’re one of those experienced, talented t-shirt designers we were talking about, contact us at shirt@woot.com. Tell us about your previous design experience, and include some samples of your work. We will look at every submission, but unfortunately, we might not be able to respond to everyone.
Here’s to continued fame.

Thanks for the purchase–and the idea.
The woot.com thing looks interesting. They’re one of the many sites who sent traffic my way, so the interest is inherent in their audience. I might send them a few designs and see what they think.

I think this is your own creation so you should let cafepress know that the other guy is infringing.
I hope you send something to them. Your creativity could buy a lota brocoli. The cat T is cool, a great design in short time. The only reason I did not buy it was because for me it’s less about cat relation. If I was getting one that refered to caturday I would want that logo. I’d rather go with the original image or the adam and eve portion.
I’ll try and check in from time to time, so drop some info about woot if you do submit.
-thx,
bryan

-also,
I saw the shirts you posted. I’m going to wait a little while, because I just ordered the others. If your going to pull it send me an email or blog-headsup so I can get one. Also I’d be interested to hear how it looks if you get one.

I have one ordered. I’ll let you know.
I find it interesting how there are sort of two camps of people with this: those who like the “catness” of it, how it’s like cat-speak. And those who like the “inside joke-ness” of it. How it’s a big internet inside joke that only certain people get. I’m definitely a part of the “inside joke-ness” camp, and because of this, I wasn’t sure I wanted the cat on there at all. But then I figured there were people who wanted that identification with the animals (that’s how it started after all), and so I left it on there. I already have a finished design with no cat, so I’ll probably stick that up there, too, since none of the others have cat illustrations.

I know I’m harping on this… but what is up with someone on cafepress ripping your idea? Is that the case? Is it a friend? I ask because you seem to have no worries about it. I wanted to see if you are the original creator as I believe you are. If not that’s ok, because you did excellent work on the graphic design of the photo as well. Did you do that in photoshop, or with an actual staged photograph?
Comment by Ted - July 24, 2007 @ 11:45 am
I appreciate your concern. I am the guy who came up with the idea and did the pic and everything. (I’ve got a high enough res photo to use on shirts for example.) I don’t know who he is.
I reported the shop to CafePress’s copyright adjudicator. Hopefully I’ll hear back from them soon. The only thing I’m concerned about is that the Bible is technically in the public domain, but to my knowledge, newer translations are not. I made the case that mine is an artistic interpretation and therefore subject to copyright. (You’ll note I added a copyright notice to the bottom of all the pages, just to alleviate any confusion). I’ll let you know what happens.
Regarding the picture: it is an actual staged photograph. Like I said in the post, when I showed it to my brother in real life, he thought it was an actual book.
Basically, I spec’d out the type in a Bible I had, measured all the margins with a ruler, etc. Then I set up a page using Adobe Indesign with the same specs, and just dropped in the text. I had to tweak the text a little bit to make it flow nice (originally, the chapter break was right at the bottom of the 1st column, which was awkward, so I added some copy to make it flow into the second column.)
I printed it, cut it out with an x-acto knife, and just slid it in place. It actually fit precisely without further trimming, which was pretty cool. Then I just shot a bunch of photos.
The one I used was the best exposure and range of focus that I wanted, but unfortunately (and I didn’t notice this until I got in the computer, of course), the page shifted a little. I cropped it to try and minimize the mistake, but you can still see it if you know what you’re looking for.
Notice the hard, dark shadow line that runs along the bottom of the page? That is where the fake page slid just a 1/16″ off the bound pages. The flash from the camera threw that hard shadow under the “lip” where the page didn’t line up.
Dang. Oh well. What’re you going to do? I could have reshot it, but I had taken like 30 pictures already trying to get exactly the right one (since I was holding the camera in one hand with my other hand in the pic, a lot were out of focus) and I just wanted to get the dang thing done at that point.
I’m still pretty happy with the way it turned out, though.

Well Ted,
I guess that’s my idea of art. I lot of work, but not so much painstaking detail that a tourtured artist would rather turn himself into a jackson pollack. I hope you keep rights to it, I’d say that your variation is so far in derivation from the bible that your fine. So are king james’ heirs banking off the bible? I can vouch for your exisistance on the 19th and using woot’s blog you have another backup. You’ve done a lot with it in the past 5 days, I hope you continue. I’ll do my best to spread the word, maybe by a few as gifts for those with better vocabularies than mine.
-thx

I just heard back from CP. They’ve removed the guy’s products from his store. Very quick response; hassle free. I’d definitely recommend CafePress.
Again, thanks for the heads-up.
More Lolcat Bible stuff will be coming out in the next few days, but the Not A Blog™ is probably going to move away from that, generally. I’ve got plenty of other things to write about…

This is kind of a weird request, but I could really use a new non-white messenger bag… can Lolcat Bible help me out?
