Stranger 10: Television Illiteracy

And by *not much TV* I meant *no TV whatsoever*.

More straight from real life conversations. Again, this is almost word for word. The only thing I changed significantly from the original conversation was my final Noooo. I don’t usually cut people off like that. In fact, by the time this person presupposed the fourth question regarding The Sopranos I was reduced to slightly shaking my head and shrugging.

“Some people just cannot comprehend that other people may be culturally illiterate.”

Television shows are one of the allowable topics of small-talk, of course, so they tend to come up a lot. I don’t make it a point to tell people I don’t watch TV, unless someone brings it up in a conversation like this and there’s no one else around to pick up the thread. I use the line to try and deflect the topic onto other things—things that I actually know something about. Unfortunately, some people just cannot comprehend that the person they’re talking to may be culturally illiterate, and in this case, he was absolutely determined that I must know something about this show, and he would carry on a conversation about it.

Of course, now I do know something about the Sopranos. Tony has a crazy uncle who shoots him in one episode, and something else happens. I’m sure this is extremely important in the context of things cultural, but I’ve been out of the loop long enough that it doesn’t really bother me. This is in violation of the unwritten rule which says everyone must keep themselves up to date regarding cultural topics in order to be prepared to spontaneously carry on a shallow conversation with complete strangers, lest we have silence which is bad.
