The downside to doing this webcomic is that I’m now always on the lookout for material. That being said, it still surprises me when it comes along. I always think I’ll be expecting it, but inevitably, the conversations that I end up having are always more weird than I can possibly imagine. Case in point: this one.
It’s disheartening to me that this comic is word for word of an exchange I had last week. Not almost. Exactly. I was reading the paper which had a headline about Barry Bonds. Another guy asks my opinion on Bonds’ retirement. I have none. He then proceeds to ask me what my opinion is on the political situation in Tibet. Well, I do have one on that, so I started to answer, at which point he cut me off and tells me he’s kidding.
Now, if it was just us and he walked away—as I imply in the comic—I’d be thinking that he was just a moron. But it happened in a room full of other people—none of whom noticed! After this guy shoots me down for having an opinion on Tibet, he turns to the guy sitting next to him, and they discuss Barry Bonds, and I’m left scratching my head. On top of that, at least five other people heard us, and nobody thought it was the least bit out of the ordinary!
WHAT THE HELL, PEOPLE!? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!? I don’t understand! I am completely unable to relate to others on the most basic of levels. Why was I the stranger, here!?
Human nature baffles me.
