Stranger 19: Book

This has happened to me more often in the past when I would try to read during lunch. It even happened to me in the bookstore, a few times—most annoying, considering the bookstore is a place of books where one might be trying to read. I can almost understand it happening in a lunch room or cafeteria setting, although that doesn’t make it any less annoying.

From what I can tell, people who do this aren’t trying to be jerks. I think that they honestly think that talking—any talking at all—is preferable to not-talking. The only reason I’m reading must be simply that there’s no one to talk to. But now that they’re here, they can fill that silence!

I exacerbate the problem since I’m much too non-confrontational to asking them to please stop talking since I’m trying to read. I’ll just put up with it, until I “finish” my lunch, and walk away steaming because not only was I not done, but I didn’t get to read, either.

“The vast majority of books are more interesting than the vast majority of people.”

I’ve also discovered over the years that there are some people who can not be quiet. Whatever thought pops in their head is verbalized. I cannot comprehend this in the slightest—yet those people are right at home in this “we must talk to fill silence!” world, while the person who’s actually trying to be productive in a solo pursuit is looked down upon as being anti-social.

Besides, the vast majority of books are more interesting than the vast majority of people.
